Dale Whitney Strong is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for Alabama's 5th congressional district since January 2023. His district covers much of North Alabama, including Huntsville, home to Redstone Arsenal and a dense concentration of defense contractors and federal agencies. A Republican, Strong previously served on the Madison County Commission starting in 1996 and was its chairman from 2012 until his resignation upon taking federal office.
Born in Monrovia, Alabama in 1970, Strong graduated from Sparkman High School and earned a B.S. in business administration from Athens State University, along with an EMT license from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Before politics he worked in public relations for First Alabama Bank and as a sales representative for Solvay S.A., while simultaneously serving as a first responder and 911 dispatcher. In 1989, he received the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor for his response to a tornado in Huntsville.
Strong was first elected to the Madison County Commission in 1996, the youngest elected Republican official in Alabama at the time, and went on to become the first Republican ever elected chairman of the commission in 2012. During his tenure he focused on fiscal discipline, infrastructure, and the recruitment of federal agencies to Redstone Arsenal, including NASA and the FBI. Yellowhammer News named him one of the three most influential people in North Alabama in 2018.
His path to Congress was rocky: in the 2022 Republican primary he fell short of 50%, forcing a runoff against former Army official Casey Wardynski that became notably acrimonious. Strong won the runoff with 63% of the vote, secured a Trump endorsement, and defeated Democratic nominee Kathy Warner-Stanton in November with 67% of the vote. He was essentially uncontested in 2024, winning with 95.4%.
In Congress, Strong sits on the House Appropriations Committee and chairs the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emergency Management and Technology. He has been a reliable conservative vote but broke with his party on Ukraine aid and the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023, reflecting some independence from GOP leadership on spending and foreign policy.
